Dancing to be free

Dancing to be free

Interpretive dance is a form of dance style that serves to translate particular inner emotions and inner feelings, situations and human conditions, or fantasies and expressions. This form of dance is all about being and feeling free, going with the flow of your inner feelings and letting those feelings take you on a magical ride. A lot of ethnic tribes use this style of dance to translate their stories and ancestors history through the movement and rhythms of the dance. It is a dance which is used throughout the world and throughout all cultures, which shows its adaptability and versatility.

Interpretive dance is very similar to other higher forms of artistic dance, and can be seen in musicals and other mainstream media, interpretive dance is thought of as performing arts and it does not always require the use of music to enjoy it.

The style of clothing and outfits associated with the dance are often extravagant, the dancers will wear lavish costumes or bodysuits which will may be enhanced with ribbons and other similar materials. The movements of the dance are grand and eloquent, with big arm whooshes and twirls, spins and drops and other equally dramatic moves.

So get out there and get involved with the artistic and innovative dancing as there is sure to be a centre near you offering lessons and classes. Order yourself to some lavish garments to wear online from shops like dancemania.biz or borntodance.org which offer an amazing selection of costumes and their packaging is just as impressive, and you’ll be ready to get dancing in no time!

The Interlude Dance Troupe review

The Interlude Dance Troupe review

Some friends of mine wanted to get out to an art event recently after inquiring about hair alcohol testing of their doctor and making some other stops throughout the day when they were in London. I gave it some thought and here is a small bit of what I told them.

Whenever you are in London, and are looking to attend some interesting arts events, check out the Interlude Dance Troupe.

This fresh and innovative troupe operates as a non-profit organization aimed at nurturing young dancers and promoting dance. Founded in 2004, the dance company has its home in Finsbury Park at The Factory.

You can often find the Interlude Dance Troupe performing at events such as the Street Dance Weekend Championships, Collabo, and the Breakin'Convention. The company also produces an exclusive event called Kidz Take Kontrol. The troupe has also worked in many television campaigns, too.

The company has five troupes (including one that is all female, and one with members all under 13!) and a special training program for dancers under 21.

The dance troupes all have their own distinct flair, and do their own choreography. The youthful spirit and focus on fresh, innovative movement and dance always excite their audiences. The dedications to the arts, and to young people, make this troupe doubly special. They bring a new feel and inspiration to dance.

You may also be inspired to take a class or workshop, or even join one of their popular dance parties (where participants can choose themes and music) too!

Dance a lifestyle

Dance a lifestyle

Dance is like an Indian cuisine… it’s hard to choose just one. There are many innumerable forms of dances. Some forms of dances have techniques that have developed over centuries whereas few don’t have any techniques. Creativity is the backbone of all dances. Dance has the ability to transport an audience to another world.

Yesterday I was watching a dance program in television it was mind blowing. I loved the choreography, costumes and the music. The most important thing that made the program more spectacular was the Graphic and Art supplies that they used.

I have an incredibly busy lifestyle; I am a home maker and a mom of a three year old daughter, we both tap our feet and leap for joy the moment we hear any music. We love dancing. Dance brings so much of joy and happiness to my busy lifestyle. It keeps my body fit and there is no need for a special fitness therapy. Dancing refreshes my mind, body and soul.

We are living in a world filled with stress, despair and hopelessness. Many of us are tired of our monotonous lifestyle and schedule. Few end up their lives not knowing how to cope up the pressure and take decisions which harm them and others. Few others stop socializing because of their low self esteem. One of the ways to come out of these problems is to spend few minutes daily in dancing. Dance is not complicated or complex. All we got to do is to make the move to the beat. Dance is a universal language which could be understood in any form. And I suggest everyone to make Dance a lifestyle.

The freedom of Dance

The freedom of Dance

Dance is a gift given to those with crazy lives. For two hours a week my life is my own when I disappear into a church hall and return beaming, red faced and exhausted. I have an incredibly busy lifestyle, I work two full time jobs and am also studying towards becoming a primary school teacher. Along with this I live with my partner who is incapable of doing house work, so I do the washing, cooking, cleaning and gardening. Unfortunately my lifestyle takes its toll out on my body, I suffer with IBS and migrains both of which are caused by stress. However one way to release this stress is Dance.
I started dancing when I was 4 years old and stopped when I was 17. At the time I had far to many other, more cool and important things to do than ’waste'socialising hours doing a dance class. However when I reached 21 I realised that I needed to do something to relieve my stress.
For two hours a week all I need to do is concentrate on using my body to create beauty. You don’t need to have stacks of experience or to understand French (although it helps with ballet) or need storage units full of shoes and costumes. All you need is a little energy, a sense of fun and the ability to let go of all inhibitions.
Dancing is a release for the mind, body and soul. Not only does it provide you with a physical and mental work out but you get to build on your own personal creativity. It is one art form that is available to all and I suggest that everyone does it. I personally attend Highstone Dance Academy’s adult ballet and jazz classes. These classes are for pupils of all levels and ages.
The most important thing to remember is not to be scared to put on your dancing shoes!

Enjoy Dance Even During Pregnancy

Enjoy Dance Even During Pregnancy

Women who love dancing often find it difficult to stay away from dance during pregnancy. Good news for them is that they don’t need to. According to doctors most healthy women can dance throughout the pregnancy. It is a safe way to exercise, stay fit and at the same time to have a lot of fun. However, we cannot deny the fact that an expectant mother should be careful while dancing during pregnancy to avoid any kind of mishaps. The baby is her responsibility; after all, she doesn’t need any paternity test to prove that. Given below are few tips to dance safely during pregnancy:

Avoid Tap Dancing: Women who have been dancing regularly before their pregnancy can continue dancing with the same level during the first three months of their pregnancy. Movements such as jumping, leaping, and hopping are safe and permitted under control. However, proper care must be taken in order to avoid high impact tap dancing and jarring movement.

Maintain your Body Balance: It is important to dance from center of the body with correct body alignment during the pregnancy. Most women find it really difficult to maintain the body balance with increasingly growing size of the abdomen. To maintain proper alignment with growing size, tuck your bottom, keep your ribs firm and use your stomach muscles. While doing all this, it is important to know your own limitations. Remember stretching yourself more than what body permits will seriously risk your baby’s health

Reduce the Frequency in Third Trimester: It is better to reduce the frequency and level of dance during the third trimester of pregnancy. Rigorous moves such as jumping and leaping should be avoided in order to avoid any potential injuries. Try landing properly in case of jumps to reduce jarring of foot and legs.

After the birth of your baby, discuss with your doctor regarding your plans to resume dancing. Doctor will study the recovery of your body, any possible complications and suggest wisely. Don’t rush as it is the question of your safety. Start slowly and increase your frequency and level of dance slowly to regain full speed.

Basic Ballet Exercises

Basic Ballet Exercises

A bare is not necessary if you would like to do ballet exercises at home. You can use the back of a chair for this. Just make sure that the support is sturdy and the office stationers are off it.

Plie is one of the basic exercises for ballet. It can help you with quite a few ballet positions. There are two ways to do the plie exercise.

To do the first variation of the plie exercise which is Demi Plie, you have to stand duck toeing out, making your heels touch each other. Now hold the back of your chair for support. Make sure that your elbows are locked while holding the chair and do not slouch to one side. Always keep your back straight and then start bending your knees slowly, in a way that your knees are pointed to opposite directions. Do not let the knees cross over the feet.

For the second type of demi plie exercise, you have to place your feet about a feet away from each other while duck toeing out, just like before. Hold onto the back of the chair, like earlier and start bending your knees slowly while ensuring that your knees do not cross your feet.

Full Plie is a very good exercise for beginners. The first way of doing this exercise is much similar to the method of the first demi plie exercise. The major difference lies in level of bending your knees. For full plie bend your knees enough to make your buttocks reach your heels, or as much as possible.

In the second method of doing the full plie which is similar to the technique of the second exercise of demi plie, you have to bend your knees enough to make your thighs parallel with the floor, or as much possible.

Warming up your body before exercising is a must, stretching is very good before exercising for ballet.

Learning to Two Step

Learning to Two Step

On those lists on ’10 things that make people happy'or the ’Traits of Happy People'should absolutely be included learning some form of folk dance and being quite happy being bad at it. This is how it went when I learned how to two step. I was pretty terrible, but I had an absolutely great time and it relieved an enormous amount of stress at a very difficult time in my life.

The school I went to was right next to a stationers and the class itself was not called two step but ’Cajun Dance’. These are small details really, my father was sick at the time and I was back and forth to the hospital, but me and my boyfriend never missed a Tuesday night.

Cajun dance come from Louisiana. Cajun refers to the unique local culture which is a combination of French, some aspects of celtic, and a bit of black and native American. You can hear the celtic rhythms in the two step. It is a partner dance, it reminded me a bit of the waltz. You also see the accordion come into play as a pivotal instrument.

What I remember most about the class, is the method that the instructor had for making sure that you got the chance to dance with a lot of partners. It could be awkward, dancing with strangers, but if you came with somebody who was a horrible dancer, it gave you the chance to expand your experience.

The group would form two circles, one for the leader (who was usually male) and one for the follower (female). the leaders were in the central circle and they would rotate partners clockwise with each different dance. It was funny, because one middle age couple brought their teenage son to learn to dance. The whole family always smiled.

Jonkonnu the Jamaican folk dance

Jonkonnu the Jamaican folk dance

Jonkonnu is a Jamaican dance form which still exists in Jamaica. This traditional dance form has its roots and influence from the African culture. This dance was widly done from the days of slavery and in Jamaica it is usually performed at Christmas time. This colorful and attractive dance form increases the fun of Christmas. But it’s not performed frequently now-a-days.

Africa is rich with dance culture and they have a lot of folk dance. And Caribbean dances have its origin in African cultures. All the Caribbean dance forms have different forms and expressions. But among all the folk dances, this one is very popular among Jamaican people. When English colonists went to Jamaica in the late seventeenth century, Jamaican and British culture mixed together and this dance form was invented. As British celebrated Christmas, Jamaican people started celebrating with the Jonkonnu dance as part of it. And that’s how this folk dance was created.

Usually, persons who perform this traditional dance form wear costumes. They play characters like Horse, Cow, the Devil, Policeman, Big Belly woman (or pregnant woman), Actor boy and Pitchy Patchy. If you don’t have any idea as to what Pitchy Patchy is well here is some information on it. The person who plays this character wears colored cloth that covers the dancer from head to foot. When people perform Jonkonnu it looks very colorful and mesmerizing. These characters start dancing when the beat of drums starts. They also dance to other instruments like kitchen grater, bongo and fife.

The dancers would also do moves and gestures that are funny to the onlookers and adds to the vibes of the performance. They are usually as good with what they do as Enigin PLC is with theirs.

Other popular traditional Caribbean dances are Tambu, Oreisha and Shango. But none of them are performed frequently now-a-days.

Discussing Dance

Discussing Dance

I recently was lucky enough to be in a room of contemporary artists. We were drinking coffee and tea from pantone mugs but the discussion was serious. We were all interested in opening a dialogue between those of us that work predominantly in live art and those who work in contemporary dance.

Live artists need to have an understanding and awareness of their physical body in space, but all too often formal dance training is too intimidating. The result of this discussion was a 4 week workshop that explored practices in contemporary dance.

The workshop covered body awareness, the basics of contact improvisation, solo improvisation, the philosophy of movement, and working creatively with a partner. One of the most interesting things was the insight into the working practices of contemporary dancers.

Professional dancers have a fluidity to the movements and a comfort with touch that is absolutely astounding. This was one of the working practices slowly introduced to the group over the course of the workshop. Students were asked to work in pairs, exploring muscle structure in their own and others bodies.

The thing that often eludes those working in live art is the concept of rehearsal, experimentation and choreography. If you look at durational works, there is no real structure within which to rehearse. Making work that is resource intensive in terms of production costs and values can often limit a live artists ability to experiment. Think of Picasso painting hundreds of different paintings. This type of experimenting by trial and error is not really available to live artists working today.

This is where the cross fertilization with dance practice can be so rewarding. It can create a studio structured environment where a live artist can experiment and rehearse movement with other like minded individuals.

Ice skating

Ice skating

Ice skating for some is a sport and for some is dancing. I would say the best of it is the combination of both. When we think of sports, we always acknowledge the need for physical fitness to perform it the best, but with dance even though fitness is important, it is not the first thing that comes in to our mind. This is what makes ice skating so unique. It is the sport where you dance to get a gold medal in Olympics. You can even wear your ortak jewelery and ice skate. Dance can be associated with ice skating also because the performer is judged on the basis of the uniqueness of the dance steps, the synchronization of it with the music and also the timing.

There are three kinds of ice dancing, namely prescribed pattern dances, an original set pattern dance and a free dance. My favourite is the free dance, as this gives the dancer the opportunity to immerse in the music and express freely. As per me a good dancer is the one who enjoys dancing and can be spontaneous with the dance steps in accordance to the music. I would like to go even a step forward by saying that a good dancer can never dance to a set pattern as being spontaneous is what they like, or what they are. Anything else can be killing their soul and could make them totally disinterested in the dance itself. Performance and dance are entirely two different things, while performance is the act of the body, dancing is the act of the soul. It’s very easy for a true dancer to detect the difference while an ice dancer is on action. When competing for a medal, ice dancers are under immense pressure. I would not say that the pressure is more than for competitors of other fields, but with ice dancing confidence is a basic, and due to the pressure built up during anticipation, many dancers lose their confidence. And this is one of the main reasons why many dance half heartedly and make major mistakes. But if you let your soul free and let your body dance to the music, giving your 100%, then you can easily be the best, not just in your steps but also with your expression.
